writing + baking

After a long, productive day editing yesterday I got down to some fun pastimes: writing and baking!  After writing a few letters (using the art deco stamps) I set about baking a peach rhubarb crisp. It was the perfect summery dessert.  Here's the recipe..

Peach Rhubarb Crisp

2 cups chopped rhubarb
1 cup sliced + peeled peaches
1/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 + 1/2 tablespoons sugar
1 + 1/2 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup oats

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Grease small casserole.
2. Toss rhubarb, peaches and sugar in the casserole until combined.
3. In a medium bowl stir together flour and sugar.  Cut butter into flour mixture until crumbly.  Stir in oats.  Sprinkle over fruit mixture in the casserole.
4. Bake 45 minutes to an hour (or until topping is slightly browned).
5. Serve warm.

British Columbia

Our flights to Vancouver are booked!  Later this summer we have a couple of shoots on the west coast.  We love getting our yearly fix of mountains and fresh air, friends and family.

P.S. I have fallen hard for this 1971 BC Confederation stamp.  Wicked colours and design!

an afternoon

Sometimes all it takes is an afternoon.  I had a few hours between appointments yesterday so I decided to go to the park.  I did some reading, ate cherries and studied a little too.  It was sunny and breezy and free of humidity.  Sometimes being under the trees and surrounded by flowers is all I need.

I've been daydreaming like mad lately.  Mostly about Italy.  The coffee and coastlines.  Tomato sandwiches.  Espresso and the sounds of the language.

2. Niagara peaches and cherries.

some notes..

I suppose my choice of stamps tend to be a bit on the flowery side in the summer. These provincial flower beauties sure do make an envelope feel seasonally just right.

Some notes..

The Paper Place is having their summer pop-up sale tomorrow and Sunday.  It's taking place at 198 Walnut Avenue just around the corner from their main shop. I'm hoping to get on over for a stationery fix.

I just discovered Beyond the Perf via Letter Writers Alliance.  They're previewing America's 2012 stamps.  I have a feeling that the love ribbons stamps are going to look incredible on air mail envelopes!

beat the heatwave

This heatwave in Toronto seems like it's endless.  My favourite ways to beat it..

- Lemonade.  Lots.  Mixed with iced tea.
- Seek the shade.  Stand under trees.
- Try to bike in the early morning.
- Watermelon.  Chilled.  Eaten around a pool.
- Gelato.  Ice cream sandwiches.  Ice pops.
- Last resort.  Central air.

Dear Jaime

My dear penpal Merissa has the very best script!  It was a super treat to see my name printed like this.  Thanks for all of the lovely Hawaiian letters and postcards Merissa!

Papillon Press

I couldn't help but share this beautiful wedding invitation suite.  Papillon Press did a smashing job letterpress printing it.  And every last detail was thought out (including the bird design on the return envelope).  I loved making it complete with vintage postage stamps!

annual stamp poll

I suppose it's pretty obvious that I'm a stamp nerd.  Every year I fill out Canada Post's official stamp poll and mail it off.  This is where I declare my favourite (and least favourite) stamps from the previous year.  My favourites from last year were without a doubt the harbour porpoise and sea otter stamps.  (My runner up: the blue whale.)  If you don't have the ballot from Details magazine you can also fill out the poll online.

surprise pack

I love anything remotely like a loot bag.  It must be from all those birthday parties that I attended as a kid.  These are some of the cute bits that were part of my Omiyage surprise pack.  Postcards, a notebook, stickers, washi tape and cards!

paper marbling

So last night was our first adventure in paper marbling.  Joey and I marbled to our hearts' content!  The gallery was filled with happy people collaging, writing and making.  Thank you to Eunice for teaching the workshop.  Also, thanks to Caroline and Vanessa for hosting Mail Art Night.  Can't wait for the next one!

Cinzia + Fabio are getting married

How adorable is my cousin's wedding invitation?  The Italians sure do cute well! I love how you pull the heart tab to bring the groom closer to the bride!

Speaking of weddings, Joseph and I have been married six years today!

Mail Art Night II

I just found out about Mail Art Night II.  It's happening tomorrow night at the OCAD Student Gallery in Toronto.  Sounds like a fun night of stationery, stamps and sweets!  Plus there's a paper marbling demonstration.  I've always wanted to learn how to marble paper.

Canada Day

It's like a sleepy Sunday in the city today.  I love summer holidays because they feel so quiet.  Joseph and I are lounging around with nothing on our agenda. Mostly just chilling after two straight days of shooting.  (Yesterday's shoot included a couple in the cutest treehouse ever!)

P.S. I received my surprise pack from Omiyage in the mail yesterday!  Love!
